Off on location today - to Saltcoats beach. woohoo!
Never work with children, animals or fablon is todays lesson. We had to fablon the side of a bus whilst the assistant director stood watching asking when we'd be done. The sun was really beating down and causing the plastic to melt and expand making it a nightmare to smooth on. This was the first time I saw Mike (the production designer) actually look stressed. There were four of us working for the art department and we must have all looked manic whilst furiously popping the bubbles appearing with sclapels. Eventually the bus had to get into place and the director decided the shot should be at the back. Ack! - more fablon needing to be applied.
This reminded me to never take any work done on productions personally. It may never be used and hours spent on work may just be dumped.
Whilst on set I listened to decisions being made by the director and his assistants, concerning shots and blocking. It was really interesting. How they turn things around when things go to plan. Zam Salim the director often changes plans when he gets on set and I could see people working with him to alter course.
I'm pretty much doing my nosey around people now and asking them more about their jobs and the industry. People are happy to talk as long as the time is appropriate.
